Regional trading blocs are when a group of countries that lie within a similar geographic area protect themselves, through a form of economic integration, from imports from non-members. To explain briefly, there are several stages of economic integration. A political union represents the potentially most advanced type of integration with a common government and is only found in nation states. An Economic and monetary union, which is the type that the EU falls under, involves a one shared economic market, a mutual trade and monetary policy and a single currency. A common market, occurs when the member countries are able to trade freely in all economic resources. It technically means that all the barriers to trade in services, goods, labor and capital are removed. In addition to moving tariffs, non tariff boundaries are reduced or eliminated completely. In order for this type to succeed, there must be shared economic policies and rules directed towards monopoly power and other ty pes of competitive practices. Two of the more prevalent theoretical frameworks used in education are constructivism and andragogy. Savicevic (1991) points out that the popularity of andragogy has spread among practitioners and researchers in many countries, including Hungary, England, Finland, France, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and Russia (as quoted in Chan, 2010, p. 28). Constructivism, on the other hand, has become, as O’Neil (1992) observes, â€Å"a new catchword† among educators (as quoted in Oxford, 1997, p. 37). This view of education has come to dominate educational literature, according to Fox (2001), at least in Anglo-Saxon countries (p. 23) and has become one of the leading theoretical positions in education (Alt, 2015, p. 50). English vs. Bahasa Malaysia A German friend of mine once asked me why I did not use Malay as an every day language when I am Malaysian. What piqued his curiosity was when I had a Malay friend over and both of us had a conversation in flawless English. My German friend could not help but to ask us why the national language was not used. â€Å"In Germany, everybody speaks German! † he said. And then it hit me, that in Thailand, locals speak Thai every day on almost every occasion. In Philippines and Indonesia, people of whichever descent speak in the national language. On the contrary, my Malay friend and I are both born in Malaysia. We are both brought up in Malaysia and went through over a decade of Malaysian education. So why were we not engaging ourselves in a Malay conversation? On 31st August 1967, Malay became the national language of Malaysia and also the sole official language. However, the Government made a decision to refer to the language as Bahasa Malaysia (Malaysian Language) instead of Bahasa Malayu (Malay Language) to be more inclusive of the other ethnic groups living in Malaysia. I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with having Bahasa Malaysia as our default language. It is not news that the Malays are numerically superior to any of the other races in our society. But if the usage of the national language is one of the factors that define our identity as Malaysians, are we speaking in Bahasa Malaysia enough? Perhaps for the sake of national unity, Malaysians are always bravely exploring the socio-cultural conundrums of our identity at a time where our atavistic beliefs collide with the incoming urgency of globalisation. It is reported that in 2010, over RM38mil was spent to promote understanding of the 1Malaysia concept which was aimed at strengthening unity among the races in the country. So let’s ask the perennial questions: Who are we as individuals and who are we as Malaysians? And in this shiny new millennium, are we going to stay as the citizens of Malaysia or will we become citizens of the world? The truth with using the national language is that not a lot of the other races use it as often. The only time I use Bahasa Malaysia is when I need to renew my passport or licenses. English translations are already available on most forms including those found in post office and banks. In shopping malls or service centers, most people will automatically start a conversation with me in English. When I meet my friends, we chatter in English. I have lost count of my Malay friends who grew up in the metropolis, speaking English with their family members and other Malay friends! Furthermore, it is very unusual to even see two Chinese friends speaking Bahasa Malaysia to each other; they usually speak in their native Chinese language or in English! Just a few years ago, Science and Mathematics were being taught in English. This measure was taken by the Malaysian Education Ministry to ensure that Malaysian students were up-to-date about these subjects compared to their Western counterparts. Of course, it helps that most scientific and mathematical papers are in English. However, due to the pressure from certain political parties, the plan was cut short in order to preserve the competitiveness of the national language. Does speaking English make me any less of a Malaysian? Not as far as I am concerned. I still feel like a Malaysian. I am Malaysian first, and then Chinese second. When someone asks me about my race, I answer ‘Malaysian Chinese’ because this is the country I have grown up in even though English is my everyday language. I am just as Malaysian as any of my friends who speak in English and their own native languages in the comfort of their own homes. I am still the biggest fan of Malaysian food and I am still a holder of MyKad, which legally certifies my nationality. And I have absolutely no qualms when it comes to anyone speaking Malay, to me or anyone else. Looking at the bigger pictures, international countries investing in Malaysia are looking for local talents who are not only able to speak in their native languages but also able to carry professional conversations in English as well. The Boarding House Brandon D. Hart Mr. Stannard Philosophy 2 July 18, 2000 Mrs. Mooney's Deceitful Act The Boarding House, written by James Joyce, takes place in a small neighborhood located in Dublin, Ireland during the early 1900's. There were three main characters involved in this story-Mrs. Mooney known as The Madam, who was in charge of the boarding house, Polly who is the daughter of Mrs. Mooney, and Mr. Doran who was a resident of the house. James Joyce's, The Boarding House has a strange twist. It just so happens, Mrs. Mooney who is very strict and protective of her daughter allows a secret relationship to form between Mr. Doran and Polly. Pretending as though she has no idea of the matter, the inconceivable act of fornication occurs between the two-thus, scarring her daughter's honor for life. For a man would prefer to marry a woman who has not already been taken by another man. In all likelihood, Mr. Doran was wrong to take advantage of a young naive woman at the precious age of nineteen. Mrs. Mooney was aware Mr. Doran had been employed for thirteen years in a great Catholic wine-merchant's office and publicity would mean for him, perhaps, the loss of his job (James Joyce 40). Upon revealing her knowledge to the couple, she shamelessly informed Mr. Doran she wanted reparation. However, only one type of reparation would satisfy Mrs. Mooney, and that was marriage. In addition to Mr. Doran, many other men had stayed there at the boarding house and made advances towards Polly which Mrs. Mooney did not approve of, and often she pondered the idea of sending her daughter Polly away to work in typewriting again. However, Mrs. Mooney felt the men were just passing by and were not actually seriously interested in her daughter, therefore paying no attention. However, for some strange reason Mr. Doran was of a different nature. She allowed the relationship to go on without intervention, possibly because she knew he made good money, along with having a secure job, working for a great Catholic wine-merchant. Furthermore, allowing the affair to escalate between Mr. Doran and her daughter would ultimately result in the act of intercourse. Having done this outside of wedlock caused women to be frowned on by society tremendously. Mrs. Mooney blatantly regarded Mr. Doran as a mere means and not as an end in his own right. Before speaking to Mr. Doran about the incident, Mrs. Mooney stood and surveyed herself in the pier-glass, with a decisive expression on her great florid face satisfied her and she thought of some mothers she knew who could not get their daughters off their hands. She was sure she would win. To begin with, she had allowed him to live beneath her roof, assuming that he was a man of honor, and he had simply abused her hospitality. He was thirty-four or thirty-five years of age, so that youth could not be pleaded as his excuse; nor could ignorance be his excuse since he was a man who had seen something of the world. He had simply taken advantage of Polly's youth and inexperienc e: that was evident (James Joyce 40). Nonetheless, it is painfully obvious that Mrs. Mooney selfishly and manipulatively took advantage of Mr. Doran. One does not have the right to use another individual as a way to further themselves without morally accrediting the respect and acknowledgement they deserve as a person. I strongly feel it was despicable what Mrs. Mooney did. One can agree it is always wrong to treat another human being as a mere means and not as an end in his or her own right. As I have stated earlier, I feel Mrs. Mooney treated Mr. Doran as a mere means and not as an end in his own right. However, one can argue-because Mr. Doran and Polly were both legally consenting adults-that maybe Mrs. Mooney has no right to interfere with the personal lives of either person. Furthermore, one might possibly argue the fact that because Polly is nineteen-years-old, very flirtatious, and single, that this was a very effective means of finding the ideal person to marry her daughter.
